Should All USPS Employees Be Required to Wear Postal Uniforms?

When looking at the makeup of the USPS, letter carriers fall into two categories – city carriers and rural carriers. While all letter carriers deliver mail and parcels, the rules and regulations they face while on the job can differ greatly.

Rural letter carriers are to be neatly dressed and presentable, but they are not required to wear a USPS uniform. Rural letter carriers often do more than just deliver the mail; they also sell stamps, offer signature confirmation, and other tasks that can be fulfilled at a traditional Postal counter. Due to this visibility, some people are calling for rural letter carriers to begin wearing Postal uniforms, just like city carriers do.

In addition, the USPS has begun employing more and more temporary workers. Non-career workers often do not receive any allowance for uniforms. What this sometimes means is that a non-career letter carrier will arrive at an individual’s mailbox in street clothing, which can be alarming for customers.

So, should all letter carriers be required to wear a uniform?

Yes To Uniforms!

~ Customers are less likely to react with suspicion to Postal workers approaching their mailboxes and homes due to a lack of uniform.

~ Increased safety for letter carriers.

~ Provide a positive, professional image of the USPS to customers while delivering the mail.

~ Alleviate customer confusion, making customers more likely to approach with questions or for additional Postal services.

~ Uniforms allow customers to better understand when an individual is illegally accessing their mailbox.

No To Uniforms!

~ Added financial strain to the USPS.

~ Added financial strain to USPS employees without any Uniform Allowance.

~ USPS should focus on fixing other, more pressing issues such as better delivery times, better training, and building maintenance.

~ Uniforms cost too much money. Instead, require all rural carriers to have signage or graphics attached to their delivery vehicle.

~ Uniforms are often uncomfortable and not feasible for constant wear while working a rural delivery route in a vehicle.

7 Hacks To Keep Your Feet Dry This Spring

There’s no escaping the rain during the spring months, especially when you work outside delivering mail and parcels all day. No matter what you wear or what tricks you use, in the end you are going to get wet.

But wet feet are particularly uncomfortable. They make walking unpleasant and will likely mean you are colder during your shift. Luckily there are some things you can do to keep your feet drier this spring.

Try out any combination of these hacks and see what works best for you!

Hack 1: Invest in rubber overshoes and waterproof socks. Overshoes fit easily over your comfortable Postal shoes and offer 100% waterproof protection. Waterproof socks will take care of water that may sneak in over the top of your boots. They’re designed to keep your feet warm, and more importantly, dry. These two items combined make for a great defense against the rain.

Hack 2: If your shoes get soaked during the day, use newspaper to dry them overnight. Ball up newspaper and put them inside your wet shoes, then wrap newspaper around the outside of your shoes. You may need to change the newspaper several times, but this is an effective way to get the water out of your shoes for the next day.

Hack 3: Wrap your socked feet in a plastic grocery bag before putting your shoes on for extra protection against the rain. If you do this, use a bag that will cover your ankles as well. Make sure the bag isn’t going to bunch in your shoes. Be warned, this method will likely make your feet sweat.

Hack 4: Bring a second pair of socks with you in case yours get soaked. Keep them in your vehicle where they can stay dry and be changed.

Hack 5: Avoid cotton socks at all costs. Cotton absorbs moisture so any water that does get into your shoes will be soaked up. Your feet will get wet and every step you take will be squishy and uncomfortable.

Hack 6: Use a powder or balm on your feet before heading out. This helps to manage the moisture on your feet from stray water and sweat. It can also help to reduce chaffing, which gets worse in rain.

Hack 7: Consider investing in gaiters if you are able to. These sit over the top half of your walking boot and the lower part of your leg. These will seal off the top of your shoe to prevent water from getting inside. Combined with a waterproof shoe, your feet should stay very dry even in a lot of rain!

How To Choose Postal Shoes

The shoes you wear while on the job are one of the most important aspects of your Postal uniform. When you’re on your feet all day and walking miles and miles, you need the right shoes. With so many options out there it can be difficult to choose a pair. That’s why today we want to offer our advice about what you need to consider while making a Postal shoe purchase.

First off, we recommend keeping several pairs of Postal shoes on hand. You’ll want to wear different shoes for different occasion, and you may want to rotate the shoes you wear day-to-day. A lighter shoe is better for summer while a waterproof shoe is needed in rain and snow. Consider this while looking at your uniform allowance.

Secondly, always buy Postal Approved shoes. Not only will they last longer, but they can save you a lot of hassle. If you fall or injure yourself and you aren’t wearing USPS approved shoes the injury may be contested and you can be blamed for wearing improper footwear. Do yourself a favor and make sure you invest in USPS approved footwear.

Consider buying insoles to add to your shoes. They can add some extra comfort and will help your shoes last longer. Even if you have to spend money out of pocket for them, it’s worth it. Don’t invest in cheap ones; buy high quality insoles that suit your feet. It makes a huge difference.

If you don’t want to invest in shoes designed specifically for winter, invest in overshoes you can wear over your usual Postal shoes. Use these to keep your feet warm and dry while you keep your feet supported and comfortable in your usual USPS shoes.

When it comes to really rainy days pull-on rain boots are excellent, particularly when combined with rain pants. Even waterproof shoes can only be so effective, simply because they are not big enough. If you have to deliver mail in a downpour, rubber boots are a must. Make sure they have a good grip so you don’t slip.

But one of the most important things you need to keep in mind is to buy shoes with good support and good traction. These are basic tips but so important. Shoes that are too flat are going to hurt your feet. You can’t just wear any type of walking shoe.

Take care when selecting your Postal shoes. Choose your shoe width and shoe size wisely. Rotate your shoes and wear extra overshoes and boots when necessary. We have a huge selection of Postal shoes on our website. If you have any questions about our Postal shoes please feel free to call us at 1-800-229-4500 and a customer service representative will help you out.

Keep Cool With Postal Accessories

Summer is here and heat waves are starting across the country. While summer uniforms are important for staying cool, there’s more you can do to stay cool if you’re willing to spend a bit of your own money. Shop beyond Postal shorts, caps, and shirts to get the extras you’ll love.

Staying cool in summer can be tough. The bright sun, hot temperatures, and humidity are all working against you. There’s only so much you can do to combat this when you are away from air conditioning. These four products are simple, but extremely helpful when it comes to staying cool during those hot summer months.

Neck Cooling Wrap

Keeping your neck cool can go a long way in helping keep the rest of you cool. This neck cooling wrap works much better than a regular cloth. It can help to keep you cool for up to 72 hours without needing to be chilled. This lightweight wrap is made from 100% cotton. All you have to do is chill it in water or in the freezer before you head out to work.

This blue wrap’s color scheme allows it to easily mesh with the rest of your uniform. The wrap is thin, so you don’t have to deal with bulkiness the way you might have to with a typical cloth. This item is easy to transport, easy to use, and will easily keep you cooler throughout the day.

Bottle Clip

Staying hydrated while on your route is extremely important. If you are a rural letter carrier, you can’t only rely on keeping water in your vehicle. In fact, we recommend that letter carriers keep water with them at all times. That’s where this bottle clip comes in handy. It easily slides behind your belt so you can keep water with you at all times.

From here you can put the nozzle of your water bottle into the slot and push it forward to get a tight lock. This keeps your water secure so it won’t fall off as you walk. Keeping a bottle of cold water with you can do wonders for helping you stay cool.

Bandanna for Carrier Route

If you want more than a cooling wrap for your neck, this bandanna is perfect for you. This cooling bandana can be worn by itself or under your hat to keep your head cool and comfortable throughout your route. How it works is simple; just soak this bandana for 7-9 minutes and you’ll have a bandana that is cool for up to 72 hours.

Wearing this cooling bandana will keep you cool and reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and other heat related illnesses. This small, comfortable bandana, like the neck cooling wrap, is easy to transport and use, making it a great option for the summer.

USPS Bandana

This economic bandana is not designed to stay cool all day, but it will still help you keep cool while you work in the hot sun. This simple bandana measures 22” x 22”. Wear it while on your route to shield you from the sun. Keeping the sun off of your head can go a remarkably long way when it comes to keeping you cool.

The Postal logo is imprinted in the corner of the bandana, making it fit in perfectly with the rest of your USPS uniform. The white color also won’t soak in the sun’s rays!

Our Favorite Rain Gear

April is just around the corner, meaning a lot of rain while out on your routes. Today we’re featuring our favorite rain gear that will help keep you dry!

Our first choice is the Postal Rainwear 42” Long Coat.

This long coat is designed to keep more of your body dry than a standard jacket or parka. Use a detachable hood so you can easily remove it when the rain slows down. This coat also features reflective postal ribbons, so you can stay seen and safe even in the pouring rain. This coat is easy to put on and remove, so you can even leave it in your vehicle until you need it.

If you don’t want such a long garment, you may like the Postal Rainwear Lined Parka.

The parka keeps less of you dry, but can be less cumbersome to wear than a long coat. It features a zipper front along with snap closures to keep you extra warm and dry on chilly, wet days. Like our long coat, it is designed with reflective postal ribbons to increase your safety. This parka also has an attached roll-up hood, so there’s no need to attach or detach anything to keep your head dry.

If you choose to stick with a shorter coat, you may want Postal Rainwear Trousers.

Not only will these trousers keep you dry, they’ll keep you comfortable. They are made with an elastic waistband, fly front, take up snaps on the waist, AND slash openings on the sides so they can slip over shoes with ease. Like our other rain gear, these trousers feature postal reflective ribbons. Pairing these with the right jacket will keep you as dry as possible on your route.

One of our absolute favorites is the Postal Rainwear 35” Long Cape.

This cape keeps the rain off not only you, but your mail. Simply slip this on, attach it to your coat, and keep your mail safe and dry inside. This is the perfect item to keep in your vehicle for impromptu rain showers, since it is a simple addition to your uniform. The reflective postal ribbon is on this cape as well. It’s a favorite among letter carriers for rainy conditions!

The last item we’re featuring is the Postal Rainwear Detachable Hood.

This item, like all the rain gear we’ve featured here today, is certified by the United States Navy Clothing and Textile Facility. You can snap it onto raincoats so you have a rain repellent hood whenever you need it. The sizing is universal, so you don’t have to worry about finding the perfect one for your head. This is a great addition to our other rain gear items to keep you extra dry.

USA and Union Made

madeInUSAunionMade

Here at MyPostalUniforms.com, we believe it is important that we provide items that are manufactured right here in the USA. That is why we strive to sell products that are both USA made as well as Union made. We are very proud that the majority of our products are made here in the United States of America, and that we also carry a large amount of items made by union members.

While it makes sense that USPS uniforms should be manufactured in the USA, some people may wonder if it matters if the other products they consume should be as well. We’re strong supporters of USA made items, and in case you aren’t sure why, we’ve got some pretty compelling reasons to share with you.

Of course, the most obvious reason is that if you are purchasing American-made products, you are purchasing goods from other Americans. Americans who have jobs. Unemployment is a big problem that needs to be tackled, and USA-made items create American jobs. Many items that we consume are now manufactured overseas, which is why it is important to buy American goods whenever we can. Factories often lay off employees or close down, but if we keeping shopping for products made in the USA, we may be able to prevent that.

Another compelling reason to buy items that are made in the USA is that working conditions in other countries are often poor. Many workplaces in the countries we buy from have less or even no work regulations. In the USA, we place great value on our workplace standards and labor requirements. When you buy products not made in the USA, you are supporting an industry that often has dreadful work conditions, very long work days, and employs young children.

The environment is another big factor concerning this issue. This issue is also multi-faceted. One of the major concerns is that when we buy products that are manufactured in other countries, we are often buying products from countries with few or no environmental regulations. China, for example, has some of the worst pollution in the world. In many areas of China the air is not considered safe enough to breathe. Air pollution in China is indirectly responsible for the death of many Chinese citizens every year. It’s not only the air that is polluted either. The water and soil is also not safe. Not only that, but the coN1030361BIGst of importing these items is great as well. This includes in terms of money, and in terms of the emissions going into the environment when items are transported.

We were inspired to create this informative post after promoting our new USPS work t-shirts, which are exclusively made in the USA. These union made quality shirts are a great choice for our customers. If you’re interested, you can take a look at them here.

We hope you’re as big a fan of USA made products as we are. We will continue to offer quality USA made products on our website to meet all your USPS needs.

It’s National Postal Worker Day

Today is National Postal Worker Day, and MyPostalUniforms.com wants to celebrate all the hardworking women and men that comprise the USPS.

The USPS has been around, in one state or another, about as long as the USA has. It provides postal service to the entire country, with no direct taxpayer dollars. There are many different positions that can be held within the USPS. Every single employee plays an important role in getting mail and packages across the country. Mail handlers and processors prepare the mail. Clerks handle customer service, as well as a myriad of other duties. There are non-career USPS employees who are hired to fill in the gaps, while maintenance and custodian employees oversee the operation and cleaning of USPS facilities. There is of course management, and who can forget about letter carriers, who brave all sorts of weather conditions on a daily basis to deliver the mail to the people of America?

Today is the day to express gratitude to all the employees of the USPS. Even in the age of the internet, there are still millions of pieces of mail that are processed every year. The last reported figure was 155.4 billion. That amount of mail means a lot of work, and we want to honor that today.

The USPS is historic, and as the 4th of July approaches now is the time to remember that more than ever.

As we mentioned earlier, we want to celebrate this important day. N1028636N1029150To do so, we have a special sale that all USPS employees can benefit from.
